Trending Christmas napkin folding idea with white linen, jute twine, an evergreen sprig and a cinnamon stick

Trend report from my dining table: this year, Christmas napkins are the star. Ribbon-tied rolls, cinnamon sticks, velvet bows and little tree folds are all over my Pinterest feed, and I'm saving every single one.

I'll admit it. I've been known to set the table early just so I can admire the napkins with my morning coffee. (And a chocolate or two. It's the holidays!)

Below are the 11 napkin trends I'd copy first, with what you need for each one, so your table looks finished before dinner even comes out of the oven.

Grab your napkins and a spool of ribbon. Here we go!

11 Trending Christmas Napkin Folding Ideas

Each of these takes a few minutes per place setting. Most start with a simple roll or rectangle fold, and one pretty accent finishes the look. (Want folds for the rest of the year? My everyday napkin folding ideas are right here.)

So festive!

Trending red Christmas napkin with a silver napkin ring, white berries and greenery on a holiday place setting

Red Napkin, Silver Ring, Snowy Berries

Red is the Christmas trend that never leaves, and I'm so glad. Fold a bright red napkin into a neat rectangle and slide on a silver ring.

Then tuck a few white berries and a sprig of greenery right at the ring. That bit of white keeps the red looking crisp. Fancy!

Cream Christmas napkin rolled and tied with a red and green striped ribbon bow

The Candy Stripe Ribbon Roll

Striped ribbon is everywhere this season. Roll a cream napkin tightly, wrap a red-and-green striped ribbon around the middle twice and tie a bow on top.

It looks like a little present at every seat. Your guests will want to unwrap it!

White linen Christmas napkin wrapped in jute twine with an evergreen sprig and a cinnamon stick

Cinnamon, Twine and Evergreen

This one smells as good as it looks. Wrap a white linen napkin with jute twine, then slip a sprig of evergreen and one cinnamon stick under the knot.

It's a lovely pick for a farmhouse-style table or a Christmas Eve supper. Now I'm hungry!

Deep green Christmas napkin with a silver leaf accent and a sprig of red berries

Deep Green with a Silver Leaf

Deep green napkins are one of my favorite trends this year. Pair one with a silver leaf-shaped accent and a sprig of red berries.

The silver catches the candlelight, and the berries add a pop of red. Gorgeous on a white or wood table!

Embroidered Christmas napkin with a gold napkin ring beside evergreen garland and candlelight

Embroidered Linen and a Gold Ring

When the napkin itself is pretty, keep the fold easy. A simple rectangle shows off the embroidery, and a golden napkin ring finishes it.

Set it beside garland and a few taper candles and it's ready for royalty. So lovely!

Red satin Christmas napkin loosely gathered and tied with a cream ribbon bow

Red Satin with a Cream Bow

Satin is one of the softest trends on my list. Loosely gather a red satin napkin in the middle and tie it with a cream ribbon bow.

The sheen dresses up the table for you, so the bow can stay simple. Perfect for a candlelit dinner with your favorite people.

Rolled Christmas napkin tied with twine and dried foliage for a natural holiday place setting

Twine and Dried Foliage

For a natural, organic table, roll a neutral napkin, tie it with twine and tuck in a bit of dried foliage, like eucalyptus or fern.

Want more color? Swap in a red napkin or add a few berries. Your pick!

Christmas napkin folded with cutlery and wrapped in twine on black and gold plates with evergreen garland

The Cutlery Wrap

This layered setup is trending again, and it's so practical. Fold the napkin into a rectangle, lay the fork and knife on top and wrap the whole bundle with twine.

Set it on black and gold plates with a line of evergreen garland down the table. Done!

Folded Christmas napkin with a velvet ribbon, decorative napkin ring and small flower accents

Velvet Ribbon and Little Flowers

Velvet ribbon is my favorite finish this year. Fold the napkin, add a decorative ring, then tuck in a small flower or two, like a mini rose or a sprig of waxflower.

It's festive for Christmas dinner and pretty enough to keep using through New Year's.

Simple Christmas napkin fold with a personalized name tag and a sprig of greenery

Name Tags for Every Guest

Personalized napkins are a trend I hope sticks around. Do a simple fold, tie on a little name tag with ribbon and add a sprig of greenery.

Each guest knows where to sit, and they get a tiny keepsake to take home. Cute!

Napkin folded into a Christmas tree shape topped with a jeweled ornament napkin ring

The Christmas Tree Fold

The tree fold is the one everyone asks about. Fold the napkin into quarters, fold the layers up into stacked triangles and you've got a little tree. Top it with a jeweled ornament-style ring.

It's the showstopper of the list, and kids love finding one on their plate. How cute!

Quick Tips for Trendy Christmas Napkins

  • Pick 2 colors from your Christmas tablescape and repeat them in the napkin and the ribbon.
  • Iron or steam your napkins first, so the folds stay crisp.
  • Cut about 24 inches of ribbon per napkin for a bow with long tails.
  • Fold napkins the day before and keep them flat on a tray.
  • Add fresh greenery and berries the morning of, so they stay perky.

Oh, and by the way! Day 23 of my free 30-Day Home Styling Playbook is about styling your dining table, so it's a great next step once your napkins are ready.
