How to Style a Christmas Wreath Over Your Mantel Like a Pro
I’ve always thought a wreath above the mantel is like the crown jewel of holiday decorating. It’s like that one piece that pulls it all together.
Sure, you can have all the garland, stockings, and candles you want, but when you add that perfectly chosen wreath above it all, suddenly your mantel is ready for Christmas (even if you haven’t done any of your holiday shopping yet). Sorry, I can’t help you with that!
If you’ve ever been unsure how to pick the right wreath, how to hang it without hassle, or how to make sure it blends with the rest of your mantel decor, this guide will walk you through it step by step.
I’ll share some of my favorite tricks, creative styling options, and even a few decorating mistakes to avoid, so your wreath gets the attention it deserves.
Choosing Your Wreath
Let’s start with what I think is the most important piece…the wreath itself. Think of it as the centerpiece for your entire mantel display. Get this part right, and everything else falls into place.
Sizing
If you’re hanging your wreath above the mantel, it should be proportional to the width of the fireplace. As a general rule, I’d aim for a wreath that’s about two-thirds the width of the mantel. Too small, and it looks lost. Too large, and it’ll overwhelm the space.
If you already have a mirror or piece of art above your mantel, the wreath should either complement the scale of that item or hang directly over it to add dimension.
Style options are endless
The classic evergreen wreath will always be a staple, but no need to limit yourself to pine. You could go with a flocked snowy style, a wreath made of gold leaves, or something packed with ornaments and ribbon.
For a modern twist, opt for a sleek boxwood ring or even a circular hoop wrapped in greenery.
Colors, colors, colors
If your holiday decor is more on the traditional side, red berries and velvet bows are perfect. For a winter wonderland theme, you might want whites, silvers, and frosted branches.
Hanging Made Simple
Hanging a wreath sounds straightforward until you actually start juggling hooks, ribbons, and the risk of scratching your mantel. Good news! There are several foolproof ways to do it.
Hooks and hardware
If you want something secure, use a removable adhesive hook or strip (like Command hooks). They’re strong, won’t damage surfaces, and are easy to adjust if you don’t nail the placement on the first try. If your mantel has a natural ledge, an over-the-mantel hook is also a great option.
Ribbon suspension
One of my favorite looks is using a wide satin or velvet ribbon to hang the wreath. Not only does it hold the wreath in place, but the ribbon itself becomes part of the design. You can drape it from the back of a mirror or tack it to the top of the mantel and let it cascade down in a bow.
Incorporating mirrors or art
If you have a mirror above the mantel, try hanging the wreath right over it. If there’s already artwork in that spot, you can use ribbon to drape the wreath in front temporarily for the season.
Safety tip
Skip nails, especially if you have antique wood or stone above your mantel. The last thing I want you to do is damage the finish or chip the stone!
Symmetry and Asymmetry are Both Your Friends
Once your wreath is in place, the next step is making sure the rest of your mantel decor balances it. This is where you’ll play with symmetry (and asymmetry) and proportion.
Stockings
Do you want them evenly spaced on either side of the mantel, or all grouped on one end? Both can work, try not to make them compete with the wreath.
Garland placement
Garland looks best draped along the mantel edge, just a little lower than your wreath. That way the wreath is still front and center.
Candles, lanterns, and figurines
Match these to the colors in your wreath. If your wreath is full of silver accents, use mercury glass candle holders. If it has berries, scatter small berry picks into the garland to tie everything together.
TIP: If your wreath is really lush, go lighter on mantel accessories. If your wreath is simple and clean, go bolder with garland and stockings. Let just one piece shine.
Don’t Stop at the Wreath
Why stop at the wreath? I love adding in complementary decor to complete the display.
Garland + wreath combos
Nothing says “holiday ready” like garland along the mantel paired with a wreath above it. Choose garland that matches elements from the wreath so the two work together.
Lights
Get some fairy lights and wrap them around the wreath itself or weave them into your garland for some night lighting in the evening.
Ornaments or ribbon repeats
Whatever accents you choose for your wreath, sprinkle them into the garland, stocking holders, or even nearby table decor.
I like when a wreath has just a hint of sparkle, whether that’s glittery leaves or metallic ribbon, because it reflects candlelight beautifully. That shimmer at night makes the mantel glow.
Think Beyond the Standard Evergreen
While a classic evergreen wreath is always popular, there are so many creative twists you can try.
Multiple mini wreaths
Instead of one big wreath, hang three smaller ones evenly spaced.
Oversized wreath
Go big with a wreath that nearly spans the width of your wall. This works especially well in larger rooms with tall ceilings.
Unusual shapes
Circular isn’t your only option. Square, oval, or even star-shaped wreaths add something unique.
Skip the Common Decorating “Oops”
Even home decorators with the most impeccable taste can stumble here. A few things to avoid:
- Hanging the wreath too high, so it looks disconnected from the mantel.
- Clashing colors between the wreath and the mantel accessories.
- Overcrowding the mantel with too many competing items.
- Using a wreath that’s way too small for the area. A single tiny wreath looks like you got the last available wreath for sale in the store!

The Centerpiece of Your Holiday Mantel
Your mantel is already the heart of the room during the holidays, and the wreath above it gives it that extra oomph.
I like to think of the mantel wreath as the finishing touch, like adding jewelry to a holiday outfit. It’s not essential, but once you see it there, you can’t imagine your living room without it.
