Spring Living Room Styling Ideas You Can Do This Weekend
Goodbye winter, hello spring! Now I’m not sure about you, but when I browse around for ideas on how to update my living room for spring, I’m bombarded by painted pink walls and Easter decor.
Is that it??
No way! There’s so much more to spring decorating than going crazy with pastels. You absolutely can refresh your space with a few swaps and styling tweaks that make the room look current, bright, and yes…totally springy!
I’m breaking down simple styling ideas that’ll help you transition your living room without starting from scratch. And you can even do them this weekend!
Display Fresh Flowers Like You Mean It
If there’s one thing that says spring, it’s fresh flowers. But here’s the thing, one tiny vase on the coffee table isn’t going to cut it. You want more!
Start with a tall arrangement on your console table or bookshelf. Think tulips, cherry blossoms, or even branches from your yard. Then add a low, full arrangement to your coffee table, something you can still see over when you’re sitting on the sofa. Finish it off with smaller arrangements on side tables or even the mantel.
The goal is to create a rhythm throughout the room. When you repeat flowers at different heights and in different spots, it makes it look like you planned for it, rather than you just grabbed one bouquet at Trader Joe’s and called it a day.
Though I’m not knocking that…been there, done that.
Mix up your styles too. Combine wildflowers with single-stem tulips. Use different kinds of vases. Ceramic, glass, vintage brass. It keeps things interesting and way less matchy-matchy.
Go Green with Potted Bulbs and Plants
Real plants can live beyond the garden. So bring them inside! Potted hyacinths, tulips, or even daffodils bring life into the room in a way that faux greenery just can’t match. Plus, they smell amazing.
I like the idea of grouping a few pots together on a tray or wooden riser. Again, it’s a structured arrangement instead of random plants scattered around the room.
You can also vary the heights. For example, place a tall fiddle leaf fig next to a cluster of potted tulips on your coffee table. So pretty!
And if you’re worried about keeping them alive (you’re in good company), then stick with easy-care options like pothos, snake plants, or succulents.
They look great and they’re sooo forgiving. I promise!
Add Color with Throws, Pillows, and Fabrics
Yes, you can add color by painting your walls. But that takes a lot of time and effort. Instead, focus on soft furnishings!
Swap out those winter chunky knit throws for lighter linen or cotton versions in spring colors. Drape a coral throw over your cream sofa. Add sage green or butter yellow cushions to your armchair. Place a blush pink blanket over the back of the couch.
The beauty of this approach is that it’s commitment-free. Don’t like it in two weeks? No worries, just switch it out.
Want to go with a berry-colored pillow? I say do it. The accent pieces let you play around with color and pattern without the pressure of it being permanent.
It really is one of the simplest ways to make a big impact. I love how a new set of pillow covers can completely change the atmosphere of a room in about five minutes.
Style Side Tables Like Mini Displays
Your side tables are prime real estate, and they deserve more than just a lamp and a coaster. And it’s definitely not a place to collect clutter, right?!
Think of each surface as a mini vignette, a visual display. Stack two or three colorful books (spines facing out). Add a small vase with a few stems. Include a candle or a decorative object, perhaps a ceramic dish, a mini sculpture, or a pretty trinket you picked up somewhere.
The trick here is to vary the heights and colors so it doesn’t look flat.
Lighten Up with Airy Window Treatments
Heavy drapes are great for winter, but now that it’s spring, it’s time to open things up and let all that light in.
If you’ve got thick curtains, now’s the time to swap them for something lighter, e.g., sheer white panels, linen curtains, or even bamboo shades. You could also just pull back what you have and let the windows breathe.
Natural light makes everything look better. Your whole room seems bigger and brighter. And if you’re lucky enough to have great windows, show them off. There’s no need to cover up what’s already working.
Add Reflective Surfaces to Enhance the Light
If you don’t have a huge window, then make mirrors and glass your best friends. They do wonders when you’re trying to make a room more open and bright.
A large mirror opposite a window will bounce light around the room. A glass coffee table or acrylic side table keeps things from looking too heavy. Metallic trays, brass candlesticks, or gold-rimmed vases add a little sparkle. I’m all for a little bit of sparkle.
Reflective surfaces make your space seem larger and lighter, which is exactly what you want in spring. And they work year-round, so you can leave them out long after the season. You’re welcome!
Combine Textures for Dimension and Flow
I find that spring styling isn’t about stripping everything away, rather it’s choosing lighter materials. And you can have fun mixing and matching.
Combine linen cushions with a rattan basket. Style a wood coffee table with ceramic vases. Drape a soft throw over a sleek leather chair. Mix natural fibers like jute or sisal with smoother finishes like glass or marble.
When you add in different kinds of materials, you create visual dimension. It doesn’t take much effort, but the end results look great.
Create a Focal Point with One Piece
Every room needs a hero, one bright piece that anchors everything and gives it direction.
Perhaps it’s a vintage credenza you scored at an estate sale. Or an oversized round mirror that makes the whole room look bigger. Or even a mustard yellow accent chair that you upscale with softer pillows and a neutral throw.
The point is to let that piece shine and then build around it with supporting players.
I love a good statement piece because it gives you permission for everything else to be simple. No, I’m not saying ten anchor pieces, that becomes too confusing. You just need one great thing and let it do its job.
Refresh with Simple Decor Swaps, Not a Full Redesign
And now it’s time for simple swaps. The essence is to start with what you already have, and swap it out for something similar.
If you already have pillow covers, then swap them out for a floral print. Change up your coffee table styling. Rotate in a new bright piece of artwork. Add a pink candle. Or just move all of your furniture around to see what happens.
Simple changes create big seasonal impact. And the best thing is they’re all reversible. When summer rolls around and you’re ready for something different, you’re not stuck with a whole new room you’ve committed to.
